Mentoring is a proven strategy for positive youth development. Youth with mentors are less likely to engage in risky behavior with drugs and alcohol and are more likely to develop positive relationships with peers and adults, and to grow up to become successful adults. The supportive, healthy relationships formed between mentors and mentees are both immediate and long-term and contribute to a host of benefits for mentees such as:
Increased high school graduation rates;
Healthier relationships and lifestyle choices;
Better behavior at home and at school;
Enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence; and
Improved interpersonal skills.
